Hypnobirthing... What's in a name?

Updated: Nov 24, 2019

Spoiler alert - no crazy mind tricks or weird chanting going on. There's nothing hippie about it. (Apart from the name itself, I give you that.) Hypnobirthing is practical, logical and based on science.

Forget about mind control and someone dangling a pocket watch before your eyes. Instead, let me tell you in a nutshell what hypnobirthing REALLY is about. ⁣ ⁣ Hypnobirthing is a complete antenatal and birth preparation course that teaches you about: - ⁣the physiology of birth and pregnancy

- the tools you'll need for a calm and confident birth

- the 'mind-body connection' (fear causes tension causes pain. Luckily we can change this!)

- how to be in control of your own birth experience

- the incredibly important role of the birth partner

- the practical side of giving birth - induction positions of labour, birth place, writing your birth preferences, etc.

The aim of hypnobirthing is for women to have a positive birth experience, no matter what way their baby comes into this world. It doesn't guarantee you'll have a pain-free labour, but whatever sensations you'll be feeling, you will be calm, confident and in control.

It combines things like deep relaxation (yep, that’s all hypnosis really is), breathing techniques, visualisations (Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith and Jessica Ennis-Hill all swear by visualisations - I kid you not!) , etc. … to change your mindset around giving birth – it takes fear and anxiety away and replaces it with confidence and excitement. Yes, you can actually really look forward to and enjoy giving birth! ⁣

Benefits of hypnobirthing?

Are there any other benefits to hypnobirthing apart from having a positive birth? Most certainly! During labour the birth partner often gets overlooked or even ignored! My husband remembers feeling very helpless during the birth of our first daughter. In hypnobirthing the role of the birth partner is very important and well-defined. During our sessions we will discuss several ways of him or her supporting you during your pregnancy and labour. This will lead to confident support and decision making, it will strengthen your bond/relationship and will help with antenatal and postnatal bonding with baby! Hypnobirthing also leads to less instrumental birth and often reduces the length of labour. The list of benefits doesn't stop here though... because hypnobirthing boosts confidence and increases knowledge, it really helps you to navigate any 'plot twist'. (My lovely friend from The V Hive @Mama Dot Gang, uses this excellent term to describe anything that doesn't go according to plan. Thanks, Faye!) It puts you in the perfect position to navigate any plot twists that might unfold.

Hypnobirthing really is for every woman out there. Whether you are a 1st time mum, you’ve had a previous traumatic birth experience, you want to give birth without pain relief or you want every pain relief out there, you’re having a caesarean, or are classed as high-risk. ⁣ ⁣I'm mindful I've started this post with the words 'hypnobirthing in a nutshell', so I'll stop myself from writing another 10 or so paragraphs. Seriously, I could go on and on about why hypnobirthing is so amazing. Apart from the name - I really don't like the name... but I've mentioned that before, haven't I? Prepare yourself for the POSITIVE BIRTH that you and your baby deserve!⁣ I can't guarantee you'll have a pain-free labour, BUT whatever sensations you'll be feeling, you will be calm, confident and in control. You can do this!! I teach hypnobirthing and antenatal classes in Melksham, Chippenham, Trowbridge and throughout Wiltshire.
